Book Rare Vigilance: A Paranormal Bodyguard Romance (Whitethorn Agency Book 1) Review :

This book is as good as the author’s previous series. Unfortunately the author/publisher chose not to disclose in the blurb that this ends on a cliffhanger. Had I known, I would not have purchased. If you also hate cliffhangers and get irritated when authors aren’t up front about them, wait to purchase until this series is completed. Very disappointed by that.
“Choice, Mr. Kinkaid, is the cornerstone of my world. Without it, there is nothing . No family, no loyalty, no respect.”I was hesitant to start Rare Vigilance. Not because I didn't think I wouldn't like it. (I do. I do. I do.) Or that it wouldn't be amazing. (IT IS.) But I was scared that it couldn't and wouldn't live up to the expectations of the piece of my soul that belongs The Darkest Court. How could anything top that. And it didn't, or it didn't have to, because now I have a whole new little corner of it just for this series. M.A. Grant's books are apparently my (non jkr) horcruxes now. *shrug*It was so interesting to see the transition from Fae lore to Vampire lore. As was The Darkest Court, Rare Vigilance is well written, well researched, and very much character driven. Grant writes some of my favorite characters. She takes these broken souls and somehow leads them to each other in a complicated messy beautiful way. She makes you care about them and their choices and their fate. She makes them relatable.In Rare Vigilance we have Atlas (one of my favorite names) Kinkaid who is still figuring out how to live after being discharged from the military following an attack where he was the only the survivor. His sister sets him up on a security job and his charge is no other than the sarcastic stubborn partier Christian Slava. Filled with secrets and betrayals, they soon have to learn to work together to defeat a common enemy.Did I mention there's vampires?Listen, I will literally read anything Marion writes. She's officially an auto buy author. Thank you, next.

A great sequel and I hope for many more volumes to come in this series.The horror and worldbuilding parts seem unique enough and yet not too complicated, which makes for exciting and enjoyable read.The cast of the characters is also good, with mostly familiar faces and some new additions which got enough time to shine and make us care for them.I like the rpg/stats system. It's very simple and very clear, unlike in many other novels.My only question is about Flum's former party members. It seems like most of them are actually good people, and yet in the previous book she believed Jean that everyone abandoned her and was okay with selling her as a slave. Sounds a little far fetched.I wonder what Maria knows. Especially about Flum. If she never tried to heal her, had she already been aware about the girl's Reversal abilities?Oh, the romance part. Yeah, it's good. Even if the whole master/slave thing is not to my taste, but it's clear in this case it exists in name only, which I'm grateful for. The last chapter was cute and funny. You'd think Eterna would have more experience, being so old.
This series has the best description of combat that I've read yet. It really feels like I'm watching the fight instead of reading it. I also love the horror elements, they add a nice change of pace. And Flum and Milkit's relationship is just so innocent. I'm loving everything about this series and looking forward to reading the next volume.

As the third book in the series, I have been waiting to see Corey and Spence's kink was and it was a favourite of mine - praise/comfort daddy kink! This book does have an age gap, but not a huge one and is very much about the relationship between Spence and Corey with the added bonus of daddy kink as opposed to focused on the kink itself. In books 1 and 2 we saw just how stressed Corey was and I was so glad that he found not only a way to find calm and peace but also his HEA!Side note: Colette Davison - this series really needs an epilogue set several years in the future - I need to know if Corey and Spence have more kids, how much Blake's career takes off and what happens when Hamish is outed as a Romance Author... pretty please?
When Colette first started talking about this series I was fascinated. A: because the covers are GORGEOUS. B.) each book follows a triplet, and C). Light bdsm with Daddy kink. All three books and boys have their own journey and it’s neat to read the second and third seeing that all three of their journeys follow the same timeline. It’s low angst and just all around sweet. I especially loved this third one because of the addition of Lexi. I really really enjoyed this series and think Colette knocked it out of the park to write and release them all the way she did. I’m sad to say goodbye.

It was an impulse purchase.Emma Straub is an excellent writer, and while I really hate throwing shade on her creative work, I need to give my real opinion. I didn’t enjoy the read. It was a downer. I didn’t want to go on vacation with unlikeable characters who were all depressed. And it wasn’t funny. About halfway through, I longed for something significant to happen, but it just never came.As a metaphor for the entire experience, I give you a line from the book: “There was little noise except chewing and clinking of forks and knives.”I was bored.Spoiler alert for the rest and questions for those of you who have read it: Why was Jim fired from his job of 30 years for having an affair with an adult, consenting female? There was no sexual harassment on Jim’s part. The advances began with the woman, but we never learned her fate! Was she fired too? I get that office relationships are often not tolerated, but it seemed a harsh sentence for Jim. And poor Carmen was just dumped on by the entire family. None of them gave a crap about her. Franny was needy and in a deeply weird relationship with Charles. On the super persnickety side, there was one stupid thing that bugged me when Franny purchased anchovies at the store (the author listed the purchases) but then Franny came home and opened capers. She didn’t buy capers! They are not the same as anchovies.The point of view and head-hopping between paragraphs was jarring at times, but for whatever reason, Emma Straub chose to do it. Like I said, she’s definitely a good writer, but for me, the story was not interesting.Sorry.
This is one of the worst, most boring novels I have ever read, even by the standards of breezy-beach-read-without-much-literary-value (which was the exact genre I sought with this purchase). The novel centers on a family of dull people with insipid thoughts. Not one of the characters is likable. The plot points are not even interesting. Will the wife forgive the husband for his affair? Will the teenage daughter lose her virginity? Why does the adult son date a woman older than him? Each of these plot points are presented in the beginning and summarily resolved in the last chapter. In between, nothing happens. Just a hundred or so pages of uninteresting banter, descriptions of people's outfits and food, and careful following of the characters' movements around a shared vacation house. The ONLY interesting characters are the gay couple about to adopt a baby, but this plot is very much sidelined and the characters exit before the end of the novel. It was the only story line worth caring about and we don't even get to see it to the end. I don't understand how this novel has received so much positive press, except to think Ms. Straub's publishing house put some extraordinary marketing power behind it. Not worth the money or time.

I wonder if I could sneak my way into the Medina’s house and just forget to leave? Robson’s family is amazing and exactly the home that Marcus needs and deserves. I love Marcus and Robson together. They are an incredible rollercoaster of feels and permanently hold pieces of my heart. “I was lost and miserable before I met you. You give me purpose and make me laugh and have brought so much love and light into my life.” I love, love, love how these two are together: possessive and protective, sizzling chemistry, and best of all, they take care of and look out for the other. Their differences complement and complete. Robson and Marcus are simply perfect and perfect for each other. They’re joy, sweetness, ferocity, hope and love all wrapped together in a fuzzy, precious package that I claim forever.
I have enjoyed all 3 of the Kincaid Pack books, but this one really warmed my heart. Marcus gets a mate who adores him and more family to love him and it just made me so happy!! I have loved Marcus in the other 2 books and was so excited to read his story. Robson is the perfect balance for Marcus and I love them as a couple.

It’s a sad love story about a woman in love with a terrible person who treats her terribly.Also it’s on an alien planet where it’s always night in one direction, and always day in the other. But if it’s the setting that intrigued you, this book isn’t for you. This is a clumsy slog of a love story, with some themes about doing good in the world.Pros:Interesting main charactersCharacter development that’s intriguing to followUnique settingCons:Ridiculously unbelievable side characters. A naive college girl inspires a group of professional smugglers that they can survive the dangerous journey they’ve already done several times.Plot lines furthered by overheard conversations.Confusing, boring, unemotional fight scenes.A lack of a central problem or goal to drive the story. Makes for winding, slogging pacing.Even with my complaints, the creativity on display here is great. I’m looking forward to reading Anders’ 5th or 6th books, once her writing & storytelling chops have caught up with her beautiful, fascinating sci-fi visions.
Having loved All The Birds In The Sky, I was dismayed by this follow-up: not because it's serious and dark where Birds is light-hearted and, um, also dark, but because its exposition is lumbering and its characters are cartoonish. A key early moment, where our main protagonist encounters an alien many generations after first contact and instantly intuits something no one has ever grasped about this species, is a fair representative of Charlie Jane Anders' approach throughout the book: for this character to have the world-changing arc the book needs her to have, this thing needs to happen, and so it does. It isn't plausible for the character, it consigns all previous human civilisation to braindead barbarity in a way which while sadly plausible remains wildly underexamined for the rest of the book, and it creates the sense that anything at all may happen at any moment in this story. We're going where the plot diagram requires.Again: I adored All the Birds in the Sky. It felt integral and well conceived and full of insight. This feels like a first draft. If it had been the book that introduced me to this author, I would have given up on her on the spot.

Book Chosen of Chaos (Eve of Destruction Book 1) Review :

An awesome mix of sci-fi and fantasy. The magic system was not really explained in depth but the explanation made sense and the main character is already a mage of power secure in her knowledge. There is a lot to take in since it combines both aspects of sci-fi and fantasy so not everything is expounded upon.The book is more slice of life like then anything truly plot driven at this point, but that is available for the next book. The novel does well showing, with a little telling about the world everything occurs in, with some dark elements that are only in the sidelines at the moment. While not unique in some aspects of having faster then light travel be through another dimension that exists, this novel offers a very unique one that has a lot of potential for more world building and/or plot threads/points.The main character is awesome. She is complicated yet simple at the same time(contradicting, yes, but read it and see!) This has to be one of the strongest characters the author has wrote, at least at the start of the novel. She still faces issues that her power alone cannot conquer or fix as well as the issues of having that power which is slowly revealed.The book makes for an awesome prologue for a longer series since the sci-fi aspect allows for such a huge world. Hopefully the author continues this series even if it’s more slice of life like, just going from one thing to the next instead of some overarching plot that spans books. Also can’t believe the author got spaghettification in a conversation!
This book did a lot of things right: well developed characters, good world building, integrated exposition, etc. While well developed, the characters are ... Sterotypical? There weren't any characters i hated. The character flaws were mild. Anger management is the vice of the MC but it never got her into a situation she couldn't handle. The "sidekick", Fya, is mischievous but not excessively. While the book does contain "non conventional relationships", there are no graphic scenes and it kinda reads more lile fantasy fulfillment than anything else. Not bad, but not very compelling unless that's your thing.The combat was very well written, and the best way i can describe this book is "DnD in space". It's like a fantasy world with magic developed space flight. The magic+tech combat was well done enough to keep me reading.All that said, my biggest complaint with this book is the plot: there isn't one. The blurb made it sound like the MC would get forced into an adventure after the attack on her shop. Instead she just decides to up and leave with no real plan. We then have a bunch of character development while things happen that don't advance the plot at all. Seriously, there were zero hints of some nefarious force watching, the MC said nothing about hinting down the slavers from the first part of the book (this was briefly presented as an option like 3/4 of the way through the book but they ultimately decided to go follow up on a random tip theu got half way theough the book). The story wasn't disjointed by any means, all the various parts flowed into one another organically, but there was no sense of direction or later story. Renaming it "a look into the life of a former empress" would be more accurate. The title has literaly nothing to do with the story. The author said side the afterword that the next book might have a plot a little bit more focused. I laughed, because any focus at all would be an improvement.To the author:I gave 4 stars, not 3, because the world and characters were really interesting and there's a lot of potential for where this story could go. I hope the author sits down and figures out what the point of the next book will be. Should the MC use her ship to become a mercenary? Maybe go on a quest to look for her parents? Start a campaign againsy slavery? Someone from her past declares war? Maybe an astral monster invades and she leads a campaign to stop it. Just ... Figure out a singular goal for the next book and ensure that every scene (or, like 80% of the scenes) advance that story in some way. The plot is lile the bread of a pizza - without it, you're eating a salad dressed with marinara sauce. Build everything else in your story on top of the plot, not the other way around.

Book The Fantastic Fluke Review :

This novel just misses being a remarkable read. It's still fun and interesting, with a fairly well-developed world and, except for a few, minor details, an interesting, coherent plot. But crisp, fresh writing in the first few pages gets blunted later. The author tends to linger a bit too long when writing inner monologue, and sometimes needlessly re-emphasizes clearly established character traits.That said, it's still a fun book, and the foxy familiar is adorable. I'm not sure if I'll read another book by this author, but it's nice to have read this one.
Great book! Loved Save and Gideon, and of course Fluke! The story was great. I really felt for Sage, how he thought so little of himself, had been through so much in his life, and had an a-hole of a father, who tormented him even after death. Thank goodness for the love and support of Gideon, Fluke and Beez, then his grandmother Iris. I loved the romance between Gideon and Sage, and how the seemingly impossible actually happened. The ending was intense and great. Can't wait to find out what happens next!

Book Barbarian's Heart: A SciFi Alien Romance (Ice Planet Barbarians Book 10) Review :

I think it was clever of the author to approach each couple, and it was a simple fix to show one of the more outsiders of the bunch whom readers haven't really had a chance to learn about by making her mate get amnesia, but it was so dragged out that I had to force myself to finish. I skimmed so much, and I hate skimming, but it's all the same now. Just a twist in the plot to make each story slightly different. I couldn't even read the sex bits. I feel like once I've read one plated alien dong with a spur learning what it's like to get a blowjob, I've seen them all. They were cute but annoying with their fears and lack of communication that would've made things easier, so much so, I didn't care they got their happy ending. We KNOW they're going to have a happy ending, so it feels exhausting to read them drag their feet to get there. I'm starting to like this series less and less. Which is just sad because it is neat and weirdly hot for 3 seconds when you realize the aliens have a woman's prize dildo for their junk. I don't even have a dildo but that's really what it all is. I can't tell if it's a joke or not, but the appeal has vanished.
I don't normally write reviews but I felt compelled to this time not just because Ruby Dixon is one of my favorite authors, but also because so many reviewers felt the need to complain about the way that Stacy was written. I did not find Stacy to be"whiny" as some other reviewers did. Rather, what I saw was her initial struggle to accept that their relationship was irrevocably changed followed by a steep learning curve that had to be negotiated in the middle of post-earthquake crisis management. Stacy was very open and honest about her weaknesses and self-criticisms as the story progresses and as a result acts maturely to take responsibility for them for the sake of the relationship. Pashov does the same. At the heart of this story, is the struggle that any trauma survivor and their loved ones has to reconcile. Trauma tends to make permanent changes and relationships with others cannot ever be completely the same as they were before. Both the survivor and their loved ones have to come to grips with the fact that things can never go totally back to what they were before despite how much all involved wish that it could . . . and there's a grieving process attached to letting go of all the dreams and hopes that were attached to the person you knew before (both for the survivor and their loved ones). This grieving process however makes room for new memories and a new, stronger relationship to be forged if one can stop expecting everything to revert to "normal" and instead create a new normal where the trauma experience is incorporated into the relationship's narrative. Ruby has managed to write the story of Stacy and Pashov in such a way that she masterfully captures this process right down to the unrealistic expectations of those around the trauma survivor and those that the survivor has for themselves. She also captured the spirit of frustration, guilt, and anger when it becomes clear that those expectations are unrealistic and the choices we have to make when we come that crossroad. Do we take the risk of loving this "new" person or stew in resentment that things didn't stay the same because that is what is comfortable. I love how Ruby's writings challenge us to look at our own perspectives on relationships. For those who complain about Stacy, I suspect they are uncomfortable with the emotions associated with the stages of grief that Stacy, the tribe, and Pashov himself go through before they all reach a place of healing, acceptance, and readiness for starting over.

Jen Davenport, is badass in her own right. A brilliant attorney, she actively helped her older brothers bring their father down. She help found and co-owns Counterstrike with her brothers. Jen provides legal services for their business, it's operatives and clients. Though sheltered by her older brothers and mother, as much as they were able. Jen's empathy for those they help comes from first hand knowledge.Banner "Razor" Nilon is President of the Scythe MC. His club is an affiliate of the one he grew up in. Started by his grandfather as a place for veterans and their families to find support and the brotherhood they had in the service. While Razer's club runs clean they have an agenda. He and most of his brothers suffered injustice at the hand of their superiors. Many were discharged dishonorably, including him. Then their are his Ghost's, the ones he keeps off the books, and helps keep hidden. Razor and his officers are working to clear all their names.Bea's cousins, Cholo and Mingo arrange a meet between Razor and the Davenport siblings. In the year since the Scythes settled in Austin they have managed to put the gangs in check and provide a safe means for those who want out to get out. They feel that the two could work well together. Milo and Ethan aren't interested, even after Tex weights in with noting but good about them. There is a spark between Razor and Jen.Razor and his crew cover the Davenport sibs, when an attempted hit goes down at the Court House were they and Bea are testifying. Jen fiercely defends them when the Chief of police and Attorney General, want to arrest them. Milo and Ethan acknowledge the assist. Jen takes it further. She asks for help with some of their clients, mostly providing security, getting them safely to and from court. Razor and his crew are happy to help, it is something they have done before.Jen and Razor become closer. His crew love her, for what she does and for standing up for them. Jen's job come with threats and when those threats escalate, Razor and the Scythes step in to provide security. While Milo and Ethan aren't thrilled with the situation, Victoria, like Jen, sees an opportunity. She wants to contract the Scythes for security work for their clients. Milo and Ethan are willing, but want to see how they do in training. They are invited to face off with Trigger's Delta team.They take a special interest Sam, the 8 year old boy, who is Jen is representing and whos father Jen thinks is behind the threat. They Razor's gut suspicious of the estranged grandparents that want custody. His gut is never wrong.The Arsenal weighs in. They have vetted Razor and his members and like what the see. Like Tex, they want to step in and clear their names. Mary, Vi, and Zoey aren't asking, they are doing and they are starting with one of the Ghosts, Shadow. They are deploying some operatives with some very special skill sets to get the job done. They also have a plan to to flush out the threat to Jen. Razor is going to have her back and plans to for as long as she will let him.Great military action, romance. Fast paced and a little steamy. Great epilogue.Loved the Scythes, what's not to love about badass commando's in a MC continuing to protect and serve, looking forward to seeing more of them. Loved, Susan Stokers, Tex and Trigger's Delta team lending their help. The Arsenal stepping in to help in ways only then can.Love Cara Carnes books they are an automatic buy for me. I received pre-release copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.
This is Jen's story in the Counterstrike series written in Susan Stokers Operation Alpha series. Jen is the younger sister of Ethan and Milo Davenport and is an attorney working with Counterstrike. She meets Razor who is the leader of the Scythe MC, a group of ex military men fighting to clear their names. While working together to keep an unknown threat from killing Jen, they fall in love. I LOVE Cara Carnes and her Arsenal and Counterstrike stories!!!! Tied into Susan Stokers delta guys, you can't wait to read these stories!!!! I highly recommend this book and give it 5 stars!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤

Book Natural Mage (Demon Days, Vampire Nights World Book 5) Review :

Whereas I found Book 1 a bit slower paced, Natural Mage heats this up a bit in the Magical Mayhem world. Penny and Emery are teamed back together and continue to find out how important they are to each other while trying to deal with the threat that is the corrupt Mages' Guild. Each grow as individuals and as a couple, their magic complementing each other and producing amazing results in the magical world. I really liked that Reagan and Darius featured more in Book 2 because I fell in love with them in the Fire and Ice Trilogy. Emery is coming to realise that he needs Penny and therefore needs to stop being a douche canoe and get back into her life. Even Penny's mother became more tolerable - I wanted to throttle her in the first book. For Fire and Ice fans, Reagan is training Penny as only Reagan could - with insults and continuous threats, resulting in many laugh out loud moments. Emery is a strong character and Penny continues to be quirky, but likeable, which is normally really difficult to do without the character becoming annoying, but once again, Ms Breene handles it with finesse. I can't wait for the final book in the trilogy as this world has continued to suck me in.
The second book picks up a few months after the first. Penny is in New Orleans training to be a mage. At first Callie and Dizzy are training her, but it doesn't go well. Darius takes over the training with near disastrous results. Finally, Penny is paired with Reagan and the two develop an atypical training plan that works pretty well. Meanwhile, Emery is off thinking he's doing the right thing by staying away from Penny, but really he's just kidding himself. Thankfully, Emery finds his way back to Penny when he has visions of her in mortal danger (which happens pretty often once she’s paired with Reagan). Emery, Reagan and Penny are then stalked by the Guild, which leads to an inevitable battle and the three of them handle it with their own unique styles.I definitely liked this book better than the first. A big part of that is that we got to see a lot of Reagan in this book. She is probably one of my favorite characters, I love her attitude. Reagan and Penny are very different, but they work very well together. It looks like she will feature heavily in the third installment, so I am looking forward to starting that. I definitely recommend the book, and if you haven't read the previous trilogy, Fire and Ice, and you want to see more of Reagan, you might want to start that one as well.
